3.75⭐️ - I didn’t expect to finish this one so quickly, but the plot was so interesting and the lead character so perfectly unlikeable. The story took some weird twists and largely maintained entertaining and creepy, but I think it was about 20% too long. The last portion just kept going and going and not in an I-don’t-want-it-to-end kind of way. Ultimately it was a fun book and I recommend. I find it’s especially difficult for me not to recommend a book that includes both exorcisms and time travel

I wanted this to be the dark, gritty comedy that it wants to be so badly. Luckily this was a fast read, making it far less painful than say, 800 pages of this. Jack Sparks seems to be inspired by the Tucker Max character that was so popular around 10 years ago for being a no-holds-barred male chauvinistic asshole with the presentation of "this is who I am, take it or leave it". This time, though, he's the worst kind of atheist (as an atheist/agnostic myself, he's the worst kind) who finds himself in a unique situation that never really gets its full due. There was so much story that could have been told around what actually happened in the last days of Jack Sparks beyond the drugs, sex, and generalized dude-bro behavior which would have been a lot more entertaining. Big shrugs all around. I'll agree that Richard Dawkins is a damn TREASURE, but the occasional hero-worship of the man in this book for the simple task of utilizing an atheist card (he's a biologist too, you know) was pretty cringe worthy.

You will really not like Jack Sparks (the character) but I think that is the point.

2.5-3 stars. I picked up this book because it's Halloween and multiple reviews declared it funny and/or scary- for me, I didn't find it particularly funny or scary. I really enjoyed the first half of the book - it was a good premise, and I was all in and very interesting in seeing where the story took Jack Sparks. The story didn't unfold the way I would have liked it to, and I found myself losing interest in the last few chapters (and it just kind of fizzled out at the end)
