There needs to be more books like this for kids. I had originally bought this for my niece for Xmas, and then I read it and I ordered it for my kiddo, too.

lighthearted relaxing fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

The illustrations were beautiful, but the story was just kind of weird and didn’t really flow well. I also have questions. Where are Oona’s parents? Apparently mermaids can go on land and have peaceful relationships with humans (unlike basically every other mermaid story)? I’m sure little kids wouldn’t think anything about it, but I think it’s weird.

Loved this fun story about a treasure hunting mermaid named Oona on her quest to get a beautiful crown!

I wish I would’ve just listened to the other reviews on this book when I had the chance. There are threads that go nowhere and the narrative really doesn’t have a clear through line. The best part of this book is the illustrations, and they deserve some absolute praise. I just wish the pictures hadn’t been wasted on such a poor story.

My six-year-old and I didn’t understand some pages. Did the whales cause the current? Did the plank help find the crown?

Pretty illustrations, though.

The illustrations are better than the story.

Let me explain.

You have a Black mermaid (with absolutely GLORIOUS hair) and the cutest otter sidekick. I was obsessed. I want an otter. And together the two of them go on adventures---kind of think Ariel and Flounder from The Little Mermaid (just way more diverse). And it also promotes ingenuity and finding solutions!

But the text is meh. I wasn't wild about it; it was lackluster. So thumb through the book and marvel at Oona and Otto....and then you can leave it there.

I agree that this book is beautiful (I especially love purple and green together), but I think it's a little hard to follow. There were times when I thought the fonts could have been bigger, more of a contrast, or something else as well.
