Masterfully written, masterfully translated, really fun & engaging. I really appreciate that it feels distinctly Chinese, despite not being about China specifically. Personally, I'm not a big fan of hard sci-fi, so I didn't love how in-the-weeds about science and technology this book got, but it redeemed itself by being very well-written with an interesting plot & themes. The ideas of the limits of science, the inherent chaos of the universe, while not overly explored were maybe my favorite bits. However the whole thing was pretty great.

Really interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed it but i want to just give two warnings or things to think about before reading: 1) if you, like me, like to have background knowledge of the setting then read up on the Chinese cultural revolution if you don't really know anything about it. The footnotes explain a few details of it but I personally would have liked to know about the revolution beforehand. 2) get ready for all the physics jargon. My science knowledge is mostly in biology and anatomy so most of the physics stuff was confusing.

Those two things aren't complaints however i hope that this can help someone prepare themselves to read it so they can get the full experience.

I'll be honest, I think this is a me-thing. I don't think I like hard science fiction anymore. Like, the book isn't poorly written...well, maybe a little. The characters are so flat. The dialogue is so wooden that half the time, I can't tell who's talking. I eventually started skipping over the Three Body chapters because I just didn't care what was happening. And today I said I was going to give an earnest try to get from where I was to the end and I just didn't give a crap about what was happening anymore. Sorry. I know lots of people love this book, but it just wasn't for me.

I read this after watching the Netflix show and I was worried it would be very technical and sciency (like The Martian) but it wasn't and so it was easy to understand. I really enjoyed this because it asks questions I have been asking myself for quite some time. However I though the society of trisolaris seemed a bit underdeveloped and stereotypical. I expected something much more otherworldly but then humans can hardly imagine civilisations beyond what one knows.

This book had some strong elements, some of the sci fi elements were a bit out there. Overall enjoyable 😊

I appreciated that the earth resistance test readings looked correct. As an electrical engineer I liked that haha. I’m not so sure of OHS of maintainers dangling off a cliff though.
