Mia is frantic when her little brother goes missing on an archaeological dig. None of the ordinary channels are any help, so she turns to the mysterious Mr.King. He promises to find her brother, but in exchange, Mia has to work for King in perpetuity. At first her job involves literally just sitting in an empty office doing nothing for 8 hours a day. No one comes in or calls, she has nothing to do, but she must stay there until 6pm every day. When she rebels against this seemingly useless job, she's given even stranger, more obviously dangerous tasks. All the while, the sexual tension between her and King is at a fever pitch, and Mia is growing increasingly desperate to figure out what is going on with her brother, King, and the mysterious world they inhabit.
King takes the "tall dark handsome mysterious alpha asshole" archetype to an extreme. He continually demands weird things of Mia (like, show up at this random party where you don't know anyone, wearing this exact dress, and do not speak) and gets angry when she balks or demands an explanation. It's frustrating, but less off putting than the usual Mysterious Controlling Love Interest type because there are sufficient hints that he's caught up in a weird and dangerous world himself, and actually does need her to obey without question. The flashes of fear or worry when Mia does as she pleases, or isn't fast enough to obey his every demand, intrigue me. As of the end of the book we still don't know exactly what King is or what he or Mia's brother are up to, but there are sufficient hints that wacky magic stuff is going on that I'm more interested in the rest of this series than I expected to be.

Sadly I did not enjoy this book as much as I hoped. I like romance, I like paranormal, I like mysterious characters, I like broody characters. This book has all of those but unfortunately they just did not come together in a way I enjoyed. King for me was a little too mysterious and way too alpha and there was no hint at an explanation and I think that was what did it for me. Sadly I will not be continuing with this series as the lack of hints to what is going on did not grab me to want to find out. The book is readable though so I may try a different book by this author in future.
What the heck? In a good way, that's how I feel at the end of this book. Mia is sent to King to help locate her kidnapped brother. King is the ultimate anti-hero. He's mean, rude, bossy but there's just something about him. This book was incredibly fast paced and the level of mystery was gripping. I am non the wiser what or who King is but I'm moving onto the next book quickly to find out.
dark
mysterious
medium-paced
Interesting start to a trilogy, the information on what's going on is given at a steady pace but still keeps you guessing and the characters are interesting. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
I'm not sure about this book. It's was too annoying for me to digest the characters. I left it at 75 pages. Can't read anymore.
