- i knew it was yoshi from the very beginning lol
- the writing kind of felt juvenile / undeveloped imo
- i wish there was more detail about Japanese culture and the imperial family
- i didn't really like Izumi; it felt like the author tried too hard to make her relatable
- i did like the theme of conflicting identities and Izumi's struggle to find a sense of self and very much related to it being Asian American myself
- the romance felt way too fast and underdeveloped

It felt very comforting and cute and super warm.
It was beyond just a cute romance book, it
followed izumis self discovery, her own journey to
finding herself, her heritage and her lineage being
a Japanese born in the US. It also follows her
hearty reunion with her father, who happens to be
crown prince of Japan (do not recommend to
people with daddy issues. U will sob). Its basically
the princess diaries japanese version. I also loved
the introduction the tha Japanese imperial
customs and culture it was so informative and
fun.
That's not all because the romance trope in this
book is princessXbodyguard... yep u heard it right.
And as a girlie who doesn't really enjoy smut or
overly sexual oriented books, this was THE perfect
one I swear.
Can't wait to start the second book. It's just
perfect from start to finish. I can never say
enough.

Kinda slow
funny lighthearted relaxing fast-paced

Princess diaries inspired but unique all on its own too! Gave me early 2000s rom com vibes and absolutely loved it-I loved the characters, the romance subplot, the exploration of identity, and the inclusion of newspaper clippings to move the plot!

I was giggling, blushing, and crying throughout the novel 😭 😍

The only sort of negatives for me were that sometimes the writing could be stilted with the short, choppy sentences. I also didn’t always love the pop culture references especially when marvel was brought up; I always find pop culture references cringy because it ages the book and quickly will be irrelevant rather than relatable.

Overall though I was so immersed and giddy over the story that the writing style didn’t bother me enough to take away stars!! Finally a 5 star read for the first time since March 🥹

I’m sorry, I can’t finish. I made it 72% and maybe I’ll go back and finish it some day but today is not that day. This was one of the books I was most excited for this year, and it definitely disappointed I’m sorry to say.

First, let’s talk about the writing style. It’s like it was relying on cliches and stories before it to tell the story. It’s basically Princess Diaries meets What a Girl Wants and I think the only reason I made it this far was because I was just imagining those storylines for this one. I felt no connection to anyone because nothing was explained enough for me to feel that connection. The sentences were so choppy, I honestly couldn’t handle it.

The romance didn’t make sense at all and was so forced. It’s one of those, oh they hate each other and now oh they’re in love! Bleh

Maybe the last 30% of the book had some relationship building with Izumi and her dad, but the first 70% definitely didn’t.

Izumi is honestly pretty annoying... but again that might have just been because the writing style was so choppy.

I adore the cover so so so much. I just wish the story would have matched it.

This book is exactly what I was looking for! It's princess diaries but set in Japan. 5/5 cute, light, finding herself, coming of age.
