I really wanted to love this and from the premise I thought I would. I'm not sure exactly what my problem was with this book but I just didn't mesh with it in the same way I usually would in a fantasy novel. This isn't a bad book to be fair and I liked the plot, but it very much felt like a lot of set up for me, so I didn't connect with the characters at all. However, I'm wondering if this is all coming from the fact that this is not only a first book in a series but also (as far as I know) a debut, so I will probably pick up the next book when it comes out.

To be honest, I’m a little disappointed. I had high expectations based off the cover and the synopsis but was ultimately let down.
That ending was so… rushed and anti-climactic. I had to reread a few times to make sure what I read is what’s actually written. How are you gonna have a big bad scary villain who gets defeated in one paragraph in the last chapter?? If there’s a second book anyway, it would’ve been best to end this one on a cliffhanger then have a showdown in the sequel. *sigh* I don’t even know if I want to read the sequel. I had a few other issues that I’m too lazy to write and I didn’t really connect with any of the characters so unfortunately I’m giving this 2-2.5 ☆

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As usual, I read other reviews after the fact and was surprised at the range of folks who loved or hated it. I appreciated the author’s descriptive language that painted a picture of the forest, people, huts, etc. Could there have been more? Some said yes there should and some said there was too much already. I think there could have been more, adding some depth to the city or villages or living situations, but that might have been too much since descriptions were limited to the situations at hand. I still found this to be an engaging story with likable characters and good bones to possibly build from. I also appreciate that it didn’t end in a cliffhanger.

Most books would start off with detailing in the world and having a character witnessing the war against Earth mother. But this doesn't and it works for it! You feel the after-effects of the war and understand the characters in the world they're in despite being thrust into it. I love world building, but hate world building where I have too many questions or understand nothing. You understand the world as the characters do which is amazing work by the author. The twins have different lives, different skills but the same destiny and I can't wait for the next book.

Daughter of Nri was the last book I read in 2020. It left me feeling refreshed and ready for the next installment in the series. As a reader who often figures out plot points before the first 100 pages, there were many moments where I was genuinely surprised in the choices made by Amayo. I do wish that there was more action in this book but also understand the importance of world-building and character development.

Ultimately, I strongly recommend this book.

I love the characters in this book! As soon as I got halfway through I had to go and purchase book number two! I love the world it’s so similar to ours so not too hard to understand, Naala & Sinai are so different but both amazing in their own stories, I do wish they met a little bit earlier on in the book but overall a great read!
