4 solid stars for an a taut mystery/thriller, that starts in Atlanta Georgia, moves to London, UK and back to Atlanta. Jim Hardman is an ex Atlanta police officer, forced to resign after a false corruption accusation. He now does anything he can to make a living. He is an unofficial private detective, calling on Hump Evans, a retired African American NFL football player, for backup whenever necessary. Jim does some shady things and has a reputation for doing jobs that no one else will touch.
Frank Butler, a lawyer friend with connections all over the state and country, calls on Jim to do a job. He wants Jim to go to London and find Harrison Gault III, grandson to Harrison Gault, a wealthy and powerful figure in Georgia. Jim agrees to go. He does find Harrison, but it leads to a whole series of complications. Jim comes back to the US , thinking that's over, but he keeps getting drawn back in with new developments.
The author, Ralph Dennis, writes lean prose that reminds me of Elmore Leonard and Raymond Chandler. There is one caveat, this book was written in the early 1970s, when there was still a fair amount of racism in Georgia. Several characters use the n word. Actually racism has not gone away in the US, with the rise of Neo N**is and a President who caters to them.
Highly recommended. if you are a fan of lean prose in the Chandler/Leonard tradition.
Thanks to Lee Goldberg at Brash Books for sending me this eBook.
