Can’t rate it as I didn’t get very far. Bought the book on sale years ago. It’s been sitting on a shelf gathering dust.

Returned here to read some reviews before I give it to Goodwill. I will go ahead and give it away. I don’t need to read 1000-page book with a Meh ending. Need to enjoy the ride, at the very least.

Switching over to the audiobook version from the text copy was an A+ move for me. The narrator was wonderful and I didn't have to try to get comfortable holding a 2lb book. I think Clarke probably had a lot of fun writing this and playing with conventions of nonfiction, absurdism, and Gothic literature, and for the most part it was amusing and engaging to read as well. Ultimately though, it was just incredibly long and not much happened. I would recommend the audiobook to someone looking to get a lot of reading hours off of one purchase, and/or someone looking for a read that doesn't require a lot of mental effort.

An intricate world, a mix of Jane Austen and magic.
