A magnificent Regency pastiche redolent of Austen and Tolkien. Beautifully witty and sardonic yet refreshingly tender and gentle in the relationships — platonic or otherwise — portrayed.

The conclusions for our characters are moving and apt — bittersweet in the most perfect of ways.

Too much incidental information. I stopped an average paperback into the book and still hadn't met Jonathan Strange. This book could have been half the size. What has become of good editing?
