wait bc i actually loved this. i was hoping it would go on even longer at the end. such memorable & unique characters & even though it was long i never felt like there were periods of time where there wasn’t anything happening. writing was also old english-styled & that was fun. susanna clarke eats again

This is, first and foremost, a novel about british society in a very particular era of history. After that, it is a sort of academic rivalry. And then, finally, it's a fantasy book about magic.
While I appreciate it very much for the prose and character work, I do prefer a lot more action and much higher stakes in my fantasy. It took me a good 200 pages to make peace with this book as a consequence. I'd even argue we could have dropped about that many pages and had a much more enjoyable book.
I won't punish it for being something I wasn't expecting it to be, but I also can't rate it any higher based on my personal enjoyment. I do concede it probably objectively does deserve a higher rating, though.

300 pages into 800 page book and just don’t care about any of the characters. Slow. Not sure why this was such a hit. I loved Piranesi, tho!

Painfully slow. Would be greatly improved by the hands of a more ruthless editor.
I’m sure this is right up some peoples street, and I imagine it’s well loved. I just think it’s not right for me at this time. I will pop it back on the shelf and future me will try it again
