Oh! Her style guide must have been immense.
I wanted so very much to like this book. A lot of my friends who have extremely respectable taste in books adored this and it was happily foisted my way. Still, Regency-style prose has never really been my thing, and trying to get through the book was like slogging through mud. Something exciting would happen, and I knew it was meant to be exciting, but all I could do was yawn and think, "Oh, that must be interesting for them." I just could not engage with any of the characters.
Posting on a message board at some point while reading, I asked if there was a point where the book was supposed to pick up, where things would suddenly click into place and I'd be on a rollercoaster of page-turning and intrigue. I'm willing to stick it out for a while in a book if some kind of good hook is coming. "Yes yes!" cried the replies, "Get through the first 100 or so pages, to where Jonathan Strange shows up, and the whole thing starts to fly!" Well, he'd shown up quite a while back, I was into the 500s by the time I'd asked, and I just put the book down.

Honestly this could be a 5-star book, with interesting world-building and characters and an excellent premise. Unfortunately, the book is hamstrung by its extremely inconsistent pacing and almost completely uncritical regurgitation of early 19th century bigotry.
Graphic: Racism, Forced institutionalization, Kidnapping

This is my second time trying to read this book and it pains me to dnf it again. It’s such a well-written book! It does what it wants to do so well! It’s just not for me. I don’t find it engaging and I’m never excited to pick it up.
This is a tough one for me to review and an even tougher one to rate. I understand what the author intended and succeeded in doing yet somehow didn't completely align with my personal taste.
This book achieved to create a classic book that happens to have been written within the last 20 years. This book could deceive people into believing it to be a genuine classic. As a fan of classic literature this ticked a huge box. I was also indeed a fan of the footnotes which is quite polarising. Secondly I love both historical fiction and fantasy so a hard combination of the two was brilliant.
For all intense purposes this should be a five star read, excellent character work, immersive prose and descriptions that take you on a journey through England. A book that truly makes you believe magic existed in this world and is much more rooted in telling a historical fiction with magic in it than a grandiose epic high fantasy which is refreshing to see (though I do adore the epics). However I felt it hard work to drive through, times where I didn't want to pick it up, it made me feel sometimes like I were wading through water. Sometimes the scenes felt too long though every piece of information was needed. So as much as I enjoy the book in all that is important, I still have to factor in my enjoyment of the experience and also my likelihood of rereading. Sadly I am not giving it the five stars my brain thinks it deserves because my heart and soul are fighting for what reading is really about.
