SUZANNA CLARKE. YOUR MIND BRO.

This was one of the most astonishing things I've ever read. I was daunted to begin a 32-hour audiobook, and at the onset even more daunted to read one so deeply victorian ('beggin' your pardon's, 'i simply cannot countenance's, 'a gentleman x and y's)

One of the things I've found over this 60 book challenge is a FIERCE joy brought by stories that are about how magic is a power that can be systematized and colonized just like anything else, can be acculturated and is subject to the same ebb and flow of society and governance that strikes through everything else we do in civilization. This book is about who gains access to that power, two paradigms of opposite philosophies as to what to do with said power, and how both are extremes that lead to tragedy and suffering--and how a balance must be struck against them at the peril of everyone involved.

Everything is so stark, so beautifully imagined, so consequential and deliberate, I could NOT stop reading it. I am innately suspicious of longer stories because, in my experience with academia and theory and literature, it's often the case that the length is for the length's sake, and that once you finish a work of such large magnitude, you find that as it hangs together, several pieces seem superfluous.

This proved me utterly, substantially wrong. I am so, so happy I read this.

I so wanted to love this book. And in part I did. The story is amazing, the world building is incredible and the writing is excellent!
But is soooo slow...

I honestly considered abandoning it multiple times, in the end I'm glad I continued but I'm equally glad to be done with it (it took me 5 months to read it!).

Amazing book but definitely only for somebody who enjoys extremely slow paced books.

Too long, but imagery was beautiful. It took me 18 months to get through it because you do need to pay attention to the names and roles closely (or you will end up re-reading like I had to do.)
