I am absolutely in love with  Hrabal’s writing style. My favorite stylist. (That said I did not like this translation as much as Michael Henry Heim’s translation of Too Loud A Solitude).

This is a weird dark and twisty little book about love, devotion, and death. Framed on the relationship of the author with his many cats. Definitely dark, not for the faint of heart.

I want to mention the use of repetition, repeated phrases and motifs throughout. Very interesting from a craft perspective, it reinforces the helpless feeling of the narrator and the small scope of the memoir, adding layers of meaning and intensity.

Lacks the meatiness of a novel but still definitely worth reading for the beautiful writing, the humor (king of comedy), the reflections snuck into the absurd anecdotes.

The book begins with beautifully written adoration for Hrabal’s cats with exquisite descriptions that any cat lover would resonate with. It doesn’t take long to take a dark turn, however, and the brutal acts undertaken by the protagonist are horrific and challenging. Somehow this 96 page book manages to explore not only cat behaviour, but human nature and humanity. This is a quick read that packs a punch.

I did not expect this!
The first 20 pages are very much focused on how this guy loves his cats - and that's a running theme throughout the book- however it takes a huge turn to the macabre and is very shocking and distressing at points.
