Great story with some deaths and lots of surprising outcomes. Loved this one for the background of Starflight.
I remembered two things about this book from when I read it at the age of ten.
1. volcano
2. dragons on volcano
I also remember not really liking it---or our main character, Starflight---all that much, since Starflight spent 90% of the book being paralyzed by fear, and the setting was dreary enough to make young-me think twice when hovering over the 5-star rating. And maybe the 4-star, too.
But I have to say, Starflight strikes me as a much more compelling character this read-through. It's a tragic situation---a character who knows what the right thing is and wants to do it, but has trouble gathering the courage for it.

I think maybe his evolution as a character could've been better developed, because it feels a little bit like YOU WENT THROUGH HELL CONGRATS YOU'RE BRAVE NOW, but still. Pretty solid characterization for a kid's book.5/5 stars

From the perspective of Starflight. Getting to see how each character struggled with the underlying plot is a great way to write this series.

The fourth entry in the series, this entry focuses on Starflight, the Nightwing of the group. Taking place almost entirely in the Nightwing kingdom, we get a lot of our questions answered for what the Nightwings have been up to. Another common theme that runs through this series of books is the dragonets experiencing something that de-mystifies an aspect of their tribe's culture or value system once they get to meet them. Starflight has the worst experience with this as he finds out all of the terrible things the Nightwings have been doing to try and save their own scales. Starflight's voice is one I am intensely familiar with as it echoes thought processes, behaviors, and habits I've had when I was young. And it's just so uncanny seeing a version of yourself you want to scream the lessons you've learned at so they can be a better person. And that's not to say I dislike Starflight. I just know where he's been. So he's a unique case in that I understand, but don't condone, some of his actions. Without spoiling anything, the last bit of this book is some of the most intense scenes in the series. That and the themes being explored of what people will do to save themselves in the face of certain disaster definitely earns this book's subtitle, "the dark secret".
