Read February 22, 2022 (eyy!) - February 25, 2022. Audiobook.
So I finally got a chance to get back to this series! I never intended my break to be so long (almost three years, woops) but that always seems to be the way with these things. Despite having forgotten a lot about the earlier books, this one did a great job of bringing me back up to speed with gentle reminders without making the whole book a redundant mess. It helps that the plot sort of relied on the events of the last few books, so there were callbacks to previous events and whatnot.
This was also my first time listening to an audiobook of this series and it did not disappoint! The narrator (Shannon McManus, who also narrated a portion of "One of Us is Lying", another audiobook I loved) did an amazing job of differentiating all the characters and portraying their personalities, I got that awesome experience of knowing who was speaking before the dialogue tags were even said. (Also, whoever decided the Nightwings should have uppity British accents: thank you, I love you.)
This whole book was just super fun. I really like that each book seems to be focusing on each dragonet and letting them really develop as a character, especially because that means we get to see from Sunny's POV next book!! I love Sunny so so much (though not as much as Starflight does, hehe~ His confession was so cute!) and I really hope she's okay, after the bombshell ending we got there :( Also very excited to see more of our old friends Clay, Tsunami, and Glory after missing them for much of this book (which is not to say I think it was a bad narrative choice, I think putting Starflight on his own to sort of force him to grow was amazing to watch, I love my precious son) as well as newer friends like Deathbringer and the others! The cast is steadily growing and I am loving it.
Tui does a really good job of introducing new characters without it feeling like names are just being thrown at you, which is always appreciated. And the dialogue, oh my god! I love the dialogue!! Fatespeaker's in particular, but all the characters had some really golden lines. You can tell it's just so well crafted as a story, everything fits together really well. That goes for the plot too, the pacing and everything was perfect imo. I was surprised at how dark some parts of it got, with the graphic depictions of violence/death, but then again I vaguely remember being shocked at the first book too so maybe I've just forgotten.
I am so looking forward to reading the next book in this series (once I get a chance to add it to my TBR
