Confessions on the 7:45

RATING: 3.5 STARS
2020; Park Row/Harlequin

I enjoyed Confessions on the 7:45. It was a fun ride, even though some bits were unbelievable and predictable. I think that is my issue with domestic suspense. I am looking for gritty cases, with flawed characters and psychological villains, and this genre is based on unlikeable characters and formulaic stories (complete with twist ending). I think I figured out a solution...I need to go in like I would with an action or romance film. Don't look into it too deep and suspend your belief. As I started to let go of my curiosity and just read it as it came, I started to like the story a lot more.

This is both interesting and readable, but I do think the plot is over-complex and, in some places, highly unlikely. This is a bit of a shame as it means the characters don't develop in quite the way they ought to. However, there are some nice twists and it's all very gripping. I do wish writers wouldn't make their main characters choose a writing career though - it's just too lazy and a bit of a cliche these days. Still, a good read.

i love a good mystery; this book managed to tie all the stories together seamlessly

I don't know if I've just consumed too much material in this niche or if it was a predictable read, but every time a twist was set it felt like I predicted it.

Not a bad read as a whole.

Selena has a chance encounter with a woman on the train after a really bad day. She just watched her husband cheat on her again with her nanny in the nanny cam. She thinks nothing of the woman until she gets texts from her later. In the meantime Selena has confronted her husband and finds out the nanny is missing a few days later. This is only part of the story.

This was my first book by Lisa Unger and it won’t be my last! The story was so interesting and I spent the entire book trying to figure out how the characters related to each other. The story is told from different characters viewpoints, which just adds to the mystery. If you love suspense stories and trying to figure out the mystery, this book is for you.

3.5. the beginning and middle were pretty meh, but i did like the whole ending once things started happening.

Have you ever shared a confession with a stranger or heard one? Many years ago on a long flight I sat next to a woman who talked for the entire flight. She was on her way to reconnect with an old love and possibly start having an affair with him. She told me their whole history and their lives since they split up. She told me where her husband thought she was and her plans for after we landed. When we landed - she asked if I wanted her to email me and let me know how it went. I said sure - and a few days later got an email with the subject “It’s Sarah from the plane.”

The beginning of this book starts out in much the same way - Selena is on a train with a delay and starts talking to the woman next to her. They both end up sharing confessions with Selena confiding that she found her husband cheating on her with the nanny. The next day she gets a text “it’s Martha from the train.”

While that part felt very familiar - the story then proceeds to take many twists and turns that are different from my life. Some aspects were predictable but there are others that really kept me guessing and I listened to the whole thing in one sitting.
