This review is quite uninspired just as I felt this series continued and ended. If Fate of the Jedi was what they envisioned the Star Wars expanded universe heading towards from as far back as The Dark Nest or even the New Jedi Order then I give them credit for envisioning such a huge endeavor. But in the end I felt like this was an end that should have come sooner than now and is it an end? Some of the new characters that have came from Fate of the Jedi have been fun to discover it was just the storyline itself that dragged on too long and felt uninspired. I'm not really inclined to pick up any new books that follow after this. I most likley would but not right away like I used to.

So, I'd heard that this was the series where they were going to kill off someone major. It was going to be one of the big ones. Imagine my surprise at the end of the book when Luke, Leia, Han, Jaina, Ben, Allana and Tenel Ka were still standing. Even Saba escaped death. And Tahiri. We know that Luke is going to die at some point. Or at least according to the Legacy comic series he is. This was the perfect series to do this. It was expected. But either LFL or Troy Denning weren't up to the task of letting the farmboy die and become one with the force. Well, at some point somebody is going to have to have the nerve to shoulder the storm just like R.A. Salvatore did with Chewbacca.

And that's a wrap, I'll read the final book Crucible another time. Going from Dark Nest all the way through to this book was quite a ride, and I enjoyed myself. It wasn't all perfect and dragged quite a bit at times, but it was overall very good. It really does suck that Disney discontinued the legends books. There's so many loose ends that we'll never see the end up now. Ah well.

The ending was definitely too dark though. Everything they went through and then Luke just resigns himself to an eternal war with the Sith due to Abeloth. Not a very upbeat ending, that's for sure.

Parts of this book were so well written I teared up. All in all the book was good, but not outstanding. Usually if a book can make me cry it is an instant 5 star, but not in this case. The book didn't really end. It ends with several "to be continued" style plot teasers.

Actually, I was dissatisfied with this finale book in what has been a really heart-pounding series. It's a shame, but without giving away the ending, I can tell that the authors were told to leave the whole Jedi+Sith-love thing unresolved, and I feel after 9 books that I deserved some resolution. So that's why this is the only book in the Fate of the Jedi series that gets a 3/5.

I'm honestly mostly on board with the new Star Wars canon, but DAMN there was some good stuff in the old expanded universe that is now considered "legends".

Being the final book in the Fate of the Jedi series, it was far from a disappointment.  Troy Denning, who has written two books in the series before this one (Abyss, #3 & Vortex, #6) was able to bring the series to a solid finale. Denning truly has a way with worlds and a great talent for description and action.

With this novel, time vanishes out window drawing the reader in and succumbing him to the overall action in the novel.  It was a fast-paced movie, with each page being a “bam!” followed by another “bam!” that keeps the reader sucked in.  All the fight sequences and acrobatics were amazing, turning all of it into a pure work of art with his detail and craft.  Each sequence flowed and was effortless in the way it moved from page to page.  Even the exhaustion of the characters emanated off the pages.  There was hardly a chance to breath for the characters and the readers.  It was just an amazingly fast-paced novel.

And that was where the ingenuity lay.  The moment the text slowed down you knew something important was going to happen, and it did.  Being able to focus and zero in on what was happening at those crucial moments was extremely important.  Especially when we finally learn the origin of Abeloth.  At first it all seems very confusing but Denning wrote and organized the story to repeat the story, making it sink in for the reader.  Coupled with that, Denning opened a few doors for future novels, raising some interest as well as a few questions while he answered most.  Anakin Skywalker is to truly blame, having encountered the First Ones, the Celestials that once guarded the Force and the Galaxy.  His refusal to take the throne of balance threw the universe and the force out of wack.

Not only that, but Abeloth’s story as well would make another stand alone story to build the Star Wars Universe.

This novel was just so rich in texture and characterization, it was simply amazing and left the door wide open for future sagas.  Not to mention that curve ball at the end!  Did not see that coming.  ★★★★ (A)
