"Celebrity memoirs narrated by the author" is my favorite niche genre for audiobooks and this one does not disappoint! I will say if you've seen the Netflix special, a lot of this is not new, but I did particularly enjoy hearing about his school years and time in the Army.
I’m not even going to rate this. I just read it for the drama. Bring on the next season of The Crown!
I am not a royal watcher, but Prince Harry has been the most curious of the royal family. His grief and journey through life is one that I think, while details differ for obvious reasons, people can take parallels in their own lives and understand and empathize with him and his family.
I enjoyed learning of his story of growing up from him.
I enjoyed learning of his story of growing up from him.
Overall, I felt it was well written. I enjoyed the insider view of his life experiences and felt a lot of empathy toward him. I can only imagine the trauma surrounding his mother’s death and how it impacted his entire life. However, there were moments when I felt like he lacked self awareness and played the victim. Very much excused his adolescent behavior by blaming others. I do hope things work out of him and his family, and their relationship with the royal family.
3.5-4; Felt well edited and able to follow chronologically. Appreciated the honesty in his journey to accept the death of his mom and the intertwined theme of her life with the press and monarchy, and the similarities that began forming in his own. Could’ve done without a few sections, specifically the war where it feels like some of the anecdotes could potentially put others in danger, and certainly feels like an unfinished book… just due to the fact of the family turmoil being an ongoing conflict. Glad Harry prioritized himself and his mental health, and hopefully feels freer after releasing this book.

I really tried. I am team H and M all the way. I respect their journey. But old Hazz here kept reminding me of someone…. perhaps Holden Caulfield? By the time I got to pt 3 and she made an Eat, Pray, Love reference and he waxed philosophical about how well read she was, I was out. Wish these kids nothing but luck, though!

Having grown up in the spotlight, people from around the world feel like they know Prince Harry. But the image of what it means to be a member of the Royal Family is very different from the reality. "Spare" is an unflinching look at his own life, from tragedies to triumph, from loss to true love. I was incredibly struck by how relatable this memoir was for me. Harry's struggle with his familial relationships, finding his place in the family as well as in the world at large, and ultimately finding out who he is as a grandson, son, brother, husband and father. This book chronicles his time as a young man who is forever changed by the tragic loss of his mother, to his ups and downs as an adolescent, to his pivotal time in the armed forces, serving his country and finding his passion for service. This memoir has moments that are funny, tender, heartbreaking and deeply personal, and as you travel alongside Harry during his life, you will come away with a much better understanding of who he is a man, warts and all.
