This was a fun story. I can see the importance of its message and that it could be very uplifting to read particularly for people who identify with LGBTQIA+ identities.

For people who are fat though, it's a lot of wincing. There is fatphobia throughout the book. Some would argue that the character becomes comfortable with their size toward the end. That is true to a point but the fatphobia is not just that of the character. It seems to come from the author. (Likely unknowingly.) The person writes the character's relationship with their weight (constant and obsessive) in ways that small people assume all fat people think about their weight. Not the way we actually do.

I would recommend it with a caveat to young LGBTQIA+ friends. I would not recommend it to my friends in fat bodies.

This book feels like a warm hug. Makes you think, makes you laugh, makes you a cry. Always a comfort read. Would definitely recommend.

Wholesome and easy to follow, I found it to be predictable and unsubtle with its allegories (and at times a bit reductive) but most of the time I didn't mind that too much, I knew what I was in for with a YA found family story. Overall a comforting read, exactly the vibe I was after, left feeling warm and fuzzy.

The most heartwarming tale of the power of love, friendship, and following one’s own heart over prejudice and fear. Filled with magic, humor, and found family, and nearly every image bringing a smile to my face…a stand-out favorite.

Update: When I read this book, I was unaware that the primary inspiration was taken from residential schools and their violent, traumatic history. These schools and their harm have never truly or fully been acknowledged nor have reparations been made to victims and their families. Knowing this and the author’s lack of response or, to my knowledge, contribution to organizations supporting those affected, I will unfortunately no longer be recommending these books at this time.
