This book was a quick read. J enjoyed it and felt driven to finish it, but found it to be a little cheesy. The symbolism is very overt. Neither of these are criticisms, this book would be a 5 star read for someone who enjoys a light, cheesy read. It just wasn't my style.

I gave it 3.5 stars because I thought it was a good book, but didn't feel that I took things as deep, as it could have had a bit more world-building and character development and it felt like it relied on pre-conceived stereotypes surrounding foster children, adoptive families, immigrant rights, and the holocaust. However, I really liked the themes on internalized fatphobia and diet culture, queer themes, and the fact that it was a quick read that I could enjoy during a time when I needed a less thought-

A gentle, loving book about finding peace and happiness through community in a world that doesn’t prioritize any of the above. It’s funny and queer and delightful and says everything that needs to be said about life and love, albeit sometimes with the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

Ohhhh this book. It’s like if 1984 (though not as intensely) and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (but with a more mythical creatures focus instead of superpowers) had a baby and I loved it. The beginning was certainly slow, but by the end I found myself loving the children and Arthur as much as Linus did. Yes, I wish I was there too

It took me a while to read, but it was worth it. The story is pretty straightforward. It has a message in it, which was a bit repetitive, like getting told to you very straight and a lot, but it’s a good message, so I don’t mind that.

The characters are unique, and the relationships are very well done. I loved the character development of Linus. I highlighted a lot of quotes from the story. I’d say it’s a thought-provoking read. I wouldn’t say it’s cosy, because of the topics raised, but it’s a slower-paced low-stakes story.

The only thing I didn’t really understand is that Linus was expected by everybody to just stay on the island after only a short time there. And everybody was telling him that from a position that he’s “stupid” that doesn’t understand it. And all his reasons were dismissed as not important. He is a grownup man with a serious job and a house in a city, he can’t just decide to stay somewhere after spending short time there without coming back even for a bit. Especially when there are important things he needed to fix. And overall, wouldn’t it be strange that a group of people who only spent a month with a stranger would trust him enough to demand to stay with them forever? So I just got a bit annoyed at that. I did want him to stay though, but I understand all the implications that it would bring in real life.

Lovely book! Such a great group of characters. Overall funny and lighthearted, but deals with some serious topics relevant to modern day society (bigotry, racism, discrimination, etc.).
