Linus Baker begins this book as a painfully normal man with a relatively open mind who works a bland job and is attempting a diet. This book made me love him by the end. Every character in this story is unique, and many of them are lovable (or rightfully hate-able). This book is wordy, and can be repetitive, but I think at times it’s an effective way to show the reader Linus’ anxiety-ridden thought process. Linus’ obsession with his diet, and his conviction to follow the rules did bother me at the beginning, but by the end I understood why they were so important to mention. I found this story hopeful and fun, despite its darker subjects and the horrible realities Linus faces. He faces them with a good heart and a growing confidence, which is really satisfying to witness. It is also narrated with enthusiasm and a plethora of character voices that really bring the island to life.

A beautiful book that feels relatable in a world where we work a 9-5 (let’s be real sometimes way more) and wish we were somewhere else. I love that this book made you look at life through a child’s lens and realizing home isn’t always one physical place- it’s where you want it to be - with people who love you and you love them. That things are worth fighting for. That one person’s past doesn’t need to be their future. Linus grows tremendously in this book with the help of some magical children in a house on the edge of a cliff. His blossoming relationship with Arthur is so natural - furthermore Arthur reminds me of a Ms.Honey kind of character from Matilda. Putting the children above all else and truly being a role model. The characters are witty, funny and sassy. It felt a little slow at times but overall a lovely book. I appreciate the journey we go on and I would recommend.

What an absolute masterpiece. TJ Klune is so poetic and made me bawl by the end of it. It’s one of the most wholesome books I’ve read in a long time.
