I almost never reread books, but with the sequel coming later this year, I knew I’d want a refresher. I thought I’d just pick it up and sort of skim through it to get my bearings. I was immediately fully engaged again thanks to the charming storybook quality of the writing and the total lovableness of Linus. The book does have bits here and there, particularly bits of dialogue, that get repetitive. Lots of “I highly doubt blah blah” and “No, I don’t suppose blah blah” that seem like forcing cleverness into the characters, but I think it probably contributes to the feel of Linus’ POV as an outsider coming in, so it’s just a niche personal gripe. Overall, I love this book. It’s so gentle and, even though it is totally packed with message/lesson for Linus and the reader, it never feels preachy or overshadows the characters and plot. It’s a lovely, easy read. I’m very excited for the sequel!

I will say, having watched/read Good Omens, it’s very hard not to see Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Linus and Arthur. It could almost be read as a fanfic AU. Do with that information what you will.

This book was so immensely heartwarming. I was really worried about it being over hyped with how much I’ve heard people rave about this book, but it did not disappoint.
I’m definitely learning that found family is one of my favorite tropes & this does that trope INCREDIBLY. Every day I was so excited to get back into this world to be with all the characters, it felt like home.

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to everyone & anyone.

I do think it maybe was a little on the nose about some of the messaging it’s trying to convey, but I’m sure there are readers out there that need that & it didn’t detract from my personal enjoyment of the story.

Side note: Did anyone else get a Tim Burton vibe from this? Or  was it just me?

This book is so pure. For all the tough subjects it covers, it still feels incredibly lighthearted and hopeful without minimizing the dark aspects. The romance is so cute and absolutely grew on me. Character development is incredible. Just a great fun read.

Linus, a completely unremarkable man was tasked with an adventure. He just didn't know it yet. Breaking down his walls he fell in love, and not with just himself.

"He thought of the life he had. How he could ever have thought it'd be enough. His thoughts were alll cerulean."-Linus

Linus found where he belonged. The children, though they didn't seem like it at times, found their home. Arthur found his other half.

A beautiful book. Love TJ Klune's writing. I love his characters. They go from the most mediocre jerks who become better people. They learn to create meaningful connections and sometimes they even find love and I love those kinds of stories. The change feels genuine and I don't think I'll ever go a day without recommending this book to family & friends.

Tres white saviour

This was so unbelievably good! I loved all of the characters, and I was surprised on how funny this was! Lucy in particular had me absolutely CACKLING! In the beginning, I thought that there would be a different twist at the end revealed (
the first few chapters talked so much about Linus and his umbrella that I thought that Linus was secretly a magical creature but didn't know it and his power had something to do with his umbrella, but it turned out I was wrong and the focus on the umbrella was just something that was weirdly mentioned a lot for no reason in the beginning and then never brought up again; maybe in one of the original drafts of the book it had more of a part to play that was eventually decided against?
), but I liked, and honestly preferred, the twist that was actually done as it is much more impactful (
having a mundane human have his mind changed about how minorities are treated is much better than having him discover that he is actually part of the community and changing his views because the broken system now impacts him to a disadvantage as well
). The messaging is not subtle at all, but I still absolutely loved it. This has so many important things to say about how minorities are treated in a systemic way and how powerful and harmful prejudices can be, particularly when looking at children. It is particularly memorable when Arthur points out to Linus that the "orphanages" are just that in name because none of the children are ever adopted. This book is a found family dream, and I liked that the
romance between Arthur and Linus
is clearly a subplot because it puts the weight of the story where it is given the respect it deserves: with the children and the discussion about systemic oppression and prejudice (I cannot stop thinking about that scene with Lucy and Linus in the record store as well as the scene with all the children in the ice cream parlor; the trip to town with all the children all together stood out to me and was very well done). I don't typically like to read about children, but I LOVED all of them (Lucy was definitely my favorite, but the scenes Linus had with Sal always pulled at my heartstrings). This book did such a good job at balancing hopeful, heartwarming content with heartbreaking, serious scenes and messaging. I could go from laughing to crying (whether because something was so sweet or so sad). I was so sad when
Linus left the island after discovering Arthur was actually a magical creature as well (I did like that this was included and that it was the twist; fuck the government for trying to make Linus spy on him after all they did him (especially that one guy on the committee)
, and I was so happy when
he returned, as well as the fact that he completely exposed the terrible practices of the government to the public after quitting
. I adored this, and would recommend this to anyone!
