Ive rated the book a face value. But Ive read some things online that mention this book was inspired by the forced removal of indigenous children from their homes. I dont know if that is true or not but in reflecting on it, I dont see this book as justifying or glorifying that. While it deals with an orphanage as a central part of the story, it seems more about humanising children who are in orphanages despite broken government systems.

A very lovely, simple book of the kind of world I wish we all lived in.  The kind of world where one man can make a difference and where those who are different and rejected find the love and acceptance they need

I finished this 8 hours ago, at 5:30 in the morning, and I still have no words. The grasp these children, this character, this book have on my heart is unparalleled, I haven't felt this for a book in such a long time.

I already fall so easily for the found-family trope, but when you add queerness to it I just can't help but melt in a puddle. Yes, it's cheesy. Yes, it's predictable. No, that never takes away from it. In times like these, when everything seems so horrible and hopeless, this book is a warm blanket wrapped around you, offering you some hot chocolate and a tight hug as well. May we all find a place like Marsyas - a home where we can be ourselves, where we can blossom, and, most importantly... where we can be loved.

I picked this book off of my shelf (after it sat there for at least a year) as a light hearted read to take with me on the plane as I went to my childhood home to visit my parents. I was not disappointed in my search for a light hearted read; there is so much whimsy and love that was put into each of the characters in this book. The character growth was beutiful to read and really well thought out for each of the characters.
The way that TJ Klune carefully sews little hints of the hidden backstory and yet undiscovered plot points into the reading makes me want to go over this book again with a fine tooth comb. The language choices are amazingly descriptive and paint a picture that was very clear in my head of each character and the places they inhabited.
This book is exactly everything I wanted it to be, found family (with kids),  beautifully queer, touching with the perfect ending, and all that while the characters were relatable and with dialog that felt real.
This book gets a 5/5 from me but is definitely not a heavy read so come in with light hearted expectations!

Truly deeply wish I could immediately turn back and read this book from the beginning. What a warm hug of a book, with an important message layered in there.

I just really loved this book. Linus was incredibly relatable. His journey of self discovery, of learning to love and know the children, Zoe, and Arthur was touching. I feel like there are a lot of people, including myself, who occupy places of privilege in the various systems in the world who want to do good and think they know how, but they really don't. Linus took the time to get to know the people behind the files and learn what they actually needed to thrive, not just what the system said they needed. I loved the development of Linus' relationships as well as watching the children especially change and grow during Linus' stay. One of the only things I wasn't a fan of was how Phee kind of faded into the background. I hope she gets more attention in the sequel.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is my favorite read of 2025 so far. I really connected with Linus and the other characters. There were several characters that played active roles in the narrative, and it can be difficult to fully develop so many characters. However each character had depth and growth in their own way. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on the second book and see what becomes of these beloved characters.
