This book is a treasure. It’s a beautiful story about a guy just doing his job who has self isolated so long he doesn’t even realize he’s lonely. He is great at staying uninvolved, being neutral, reporting a high degree of detail, and not questioning orders. Because he’s so good at his job (inspecting “orphanages” where children with magical powers are raised), he is given a special task by “extremely upper management”: to inspect an extremely classified “orphanage” on a remote island where children of unimaginable powers reside. The month he spends on the island with the children and their caretakers changes him in ways that lifted my spirits and made me laugh out loud. A great book for pre-teens, teenagers, and adults of all ages. I’d love to see this done as a movie. The best part: there’s also a sequel now.

A reread before I started the next new release and it's no less delightful a second time around. There's a reason this was my favourite book of 2023 when I read it the first time. It's very moving and to have more people like our main adult characters here in the world would make so much difference.

Linus Baker is a Case Worker for the Department of Magical Youth, whose job it is to inspect the Orphanages where they often live. When he gets sent on a special assignment by Extremely Upper Management, he finds himself on an island with some very special and potentially very dangerous youngsters, and the master of their home, Arthur Pernassus. But as he gets to know them all, he must decide between his head and his heart.

A beautiful story, full of hope and plenty of heart. I adored both the story and the characters, and can’t wait to read the sequel.

A cute fictional book about acceptance and defining who you are. I generally have a hard time with the first 150 pages of TJ Klune books due to the pace and the unlikeable character traits, and that opinion transforms as the characters do.
