I read reviews that many fans did not like how Harris ended Sookie's story but I liked it! I will miss her adventures with this being the last book in the series. Sookie is a fantastic gal (can't stand her on the HBO show!) and there are so many interesting characters she meets in her tale. Fun read.
I'd give this book 10, maybe 12, stars if I could. This is definitely the best Sookie Stackhouse book ever! Though I'm a little sad to see the end of Sookie's series, I think Charlaine Harris ended it the best way ever. I find it a little ridiculous to read that some people are mad about Sookie not getting turned. Come on, will you?! All those times Sookie luxuriated sunbathing in her yard and working in her garden, all those times she got a little mushy over babies (maybe not the best way to put it, but if you don't know what I mean, tough). Who could read this series and seriously think Sookie would want to give up the sun and the possibility of someday maybe having a baby by becoming a vampire? While I'm very glad she stayed friends with Pam and maybe has a new friend in Karin, I think Sookie did the smartest thing not wanting to have anything more to do with Eric. After all, things like that happen in mortal life all the time, betraying someone like that, especially someone who says he loves you. Sookie ending up with someone who really, truly cares for her and would never think of betraying her is the best thing that could happen for her.
I'm very glad my local library has copies of A Touch of Dead (which is on my next list of books to check out), The Sookie Stackhouse Companion, and The Complete Sookie Stackhouse Stories. They also have Dead but Not Forgotten. Unfortunately, they don't have Playing Possum, so I guess I'll have to buy that somewhere, also a copy of this book. I have read the short story If I had a Hammer in Home Improvement: Undead Edition, and that was a hoot. Even if nobody else ever sets out to kill Sookie or cause her dire mischief (at last I hope they don't), I'm sure Sookie will never lead a boring, mundane life.
I've enjoyed all of Charlaine Harris' series and am very glad she's continuing Aurora Teagarden's series. She's certainly become one of my favorite authors.
P.S. I started seriously reading Dead Ever After sometime after midnight last night and couldn't put it down till I finished it. Didn't expect to read it in one sitting, but last night was another of my many sleepless nights, so it was great having this to read while I was up. Kudos, Ms. Harris!

About two months ago I re-read the entire collection, not so much getting ready for the last one, but simply because I hadn't read them in a couple of years. They're a great series. All books have interesting stories, they change, and Sookie is a character that even thought you don't always agree with, you like her and usually her mind is a pretty cool place. However, my favourite thing aboutt he series isn't just her, or the supernatural world she lives in, but how the books aren't just about her, but about her friends and the people she meets along the way. Every character has their own story and they don't just disappear simply because they won't lead the main story to any place. And even thought it wasn't ever a big a aspect of the books Charlaine Harris deserves an award for not having made people gay or straight; they were people first and only then was their sexuality discussed, and never in a prejured way. Just a part of their personalities. All in all, 13 great books and I admit I'll miss Sookie Stackhouse and her friends.
I know this is getting crap reviews but I thought the ending was fitting and ended well for the series.
i propably would have given it 4 stars if it wasn't for the ending. it has always been a great series and even though a lot have feelt it should have ended already i have never felt that. i didn't feel it this time either i would happily have continued to read it and honestly i wasn't really happy about who sokkie ended up with. i also missed Pam... Like alot!

While reading this book I started thinking, "When, exactly, did I stop liking Sookie?" Because really I didn't always dislike her. But by now she's gotten so judgemental and awful - it's really no surprise that these people want her dead. For an example, she spends a chunk of this book judging Tara, who just gave birth to twins, for having gotten fat and not spending time on her eyebrows. Seriously! So this obviously impacted my enjoyment of this book.
Who Sookie ended up with, the big question, was not a surprise to me at all, since I'd assumed it from about five books ago. I don't understand everyone's surprise? It wouldn't have made sense any other way.

2.5/5
I think the main thing that spoiled this for me was knowing from some reviews how disappointed everyone was with how she /actually/ wrapped everything up in After Dead. I mean the middle was fun to read, it was fun to throw everyone together, I guess.
But??? It was just so... mehhh?? Like I was expecting an epilogue of like - 5/10 years later? And Sam/Sookie were barely together. Also what about - I just felt so meh about it. But it's over now, thank god.

A good ending to the series. The ending could have used a little more oomph, I felt like it was a bit anticlimactic. After reading all the negative reviews I had braced myself, but I was pleasantly surprised. Overall a good wrap up to the series.
I'm glad I finished the series, not as glad I read the last couple.
