I'm a big fan of Gene Yang, and this book didn't disappoint. The story of the Boxer Rebellion isn't well known to Americans, and he did a great job of educating about it while using a super interesting story line. The artwork is great, and while the book is quite violent, Yang's style is so simple that it comes across a lot less disturbing than it could have.

An interesting story with some fantastic art by Gene Luen Yang. The Boxers half of this tale tells the story of the Boxer Rebellion from the point of view of a Chinese child who becomes a leader of the rebellion. Today, as the author has noted, Bao would be called a terrorist, but the split nature of the work allows readers to understand both sides of the conflict.

While I appreciate the insight into this portion of Chinese history, I don't do well with violence. I do think this story lends itself best to graphic novel form as I'm not sure it would be clear as a novel.
I would give this 5 stars for interest-level, story and design etc - but since the stars are for how much I liked it - I have to go with 2.

This book was my first introduction to the Boxer Rebellion.
Graphic: Violence, Murder
Moderate: Religious bigotry
Minor: Death
I know that it's historically accurate but it's almost hard to believe it because of how thrilling the book is!!
I really don't know much (read: anything) about Chinese history, so this was a really interesting read, and I look forward to reading the Saints volume. (I'll probably write more when I read that.)
I am not a big fan of graphic novels, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I liked the style of the artwork, the historical detail, and how it wasn't afraid to shy away from the gruesome realities of the Boxer Rebellion. The more fantasy-like elements were a little hard to take seriously at times, but it was a clever device to tell an otherwise difficult story.
