I loved his earlier graphic novel, "American Born Chinese". A brilliant illustration of the immigrant experience in America. This one goes into the history of China and it's struggles with the arrival of the Europeans and Christianity and the clash of cultures that followed. He has a knack for depicting longing, pathos, love, shame, anger and inner conflict.
It's not a happy story, but it's based on an unhappy history. A country at war, with a foreign people, religion, and drug pouring in and altering their way of life. This book is told from the pov of someone fighting to throw off the influence and restore their history.

This graphic novel was an OK way to learn about a historic event that I knew nothing about... so that's cool.
This is a really interesting take on the Boxer Rebellion in China in the early 1900. I love how Yang mixes magical realism with history to tell the story. It’s a two volume book this one told from the point of view of Little Bao who is on the boxer side of the war. He harnesses the power of ancient Chinese gods and recruits an army of boxers to free China from the hold of Foreign Devils. I believe the next volume is told from the point of view of the Chinese Christians who were on the other side of the war. I didn't know very much about this war before reading this and am definitely interested in learning more.
The story of the Boxer Rebellion told in graphic novel form, through the eyes of a young man. Excellent story, wonderfully told.
This one was fun to read, and the illustrations of the gods were wonderful.
There are multiple ways of looking at this story, but I see it as the story of a patriot. Little Bao goes from being obsessed with righteousness and justice to committing atrocities and sacrificing his loved ones and ideals in the name of his country. The fact that his rebellion is ultimately futile seems to be the lesser of his losses compared to what he gives up to wage it.
Definitely an interesting read.
