I liked SAINTS better, but mostly because I thought this one was just slightly too long. still entertaining and has the Gene Luen Yang classic humor that I love.

I can't decide if this should be 3 or 4 stars. I liked it, but I think my view was tainted a bit by not really liking the companion volume very much. My collective review of both volumes is here.
What makes this book interesting is the history of China and the faith of two very different religions being featured in one story.
I've come to appreciate the work of this author not only for the artwork in these graphic novels, but also for the facts that are used, and the legends that are featured.
The Chinese history is very interesting. The ideals of the religion are incredible and very supportive of the people of the time.

I didn't know what i was getting into when I started this book, but it wasn't that. It was much better than what I thought it would be. It's full of depth and presents reality and real events and decisions in a new way. I really felt the difficult decisions that the main character made were presented in such a great way to create sympathy while seeing what is wrong and yet how complicated it all is. There are no simple answers to history and life and this book really gets at that.
