Interesting historical fiction based on the Boxer Rebellion in China in the 1800s. I forgot how this got onto my radar but it was fascinating, and so was the 'other side' companion novel Saints. I don't know a lot of the history, really anything but the name of the Rebellion before reading, and I am interested in learning more. I guess it's like the Crusades, but in Asia? Religious wars are similar in vibes.

First things first. You should really read both Boxers and Saints, preferably in that order, one after another. They really are two halves of the same story.

Second, I tried really hard to be open minded and not just side with the Christians because I'm a Christian. At first, it was easy enough, but as the book goes on, and the boxers become more and more bloodthirsty, they lost all of my sympathy. This is a tough book to read.
