Graphic novel as folktale inspired historical fiction. Quick read. Good art but a mixture of fairly simple as well as fantastical. An unlike some Asian works, this came off a very approachable and didn't leave me with the thought that I was missing 90% of what was going on.

I like the ideas but between this and AMERICAN BORN CHINESE, I wish Yang would work more on his structure. Sometimes the pacing feels way too fast, sometimes scenes are set up/resolved in a page or two. I feel like this could’ve been longer or edited more in the beginning. I’m kinda iffy on the fantastical aspects as well. I would’ve loved for this to have been straightforward and literal. And yet I like parts of it for illustrating how we inherit toxic masculinity and/or nationalist ideas.
