I really enjoyed this. I liked the art style a lot and it was interesting to learn a bit about a period in history that I wasn't too familiar with via a medium as enjoyable as a graphic novel. The narrative of this was really strong and while it was a little bit graphic, I really enjoyed this.

An accessible blend of history, humor, and magical realism. Made better by reading it in tandem with its partner book, Saints.

The fantastical elements were amazing and helped show the passion the Chinese had for their country toward the turn of the 20th century.

Grades 8 and up.

A pretty big punch to the gut that blends fantasy with hard-hitting realism. Even though I knew going into this that the Boxer Rebellion was a bloody, awful conflict, this really opened my eyes to the Chinese perspective.

A mix of history and magical realism and flows seamlessly. We have the classic humor intertwined with painful realizations and topics that the author is know for, but we also get beautiful artwork in the way. The topic is rather dark but the author makes sure to balance the graphic aspects of it so it is not overwhelming.
