This was pretty good, love his artwork. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I actually learned about and understood the Boxer Rebellion but it was good. Hoping to like it more and understand a bit better after reading the sequel, Saints!

I really liked this one! The story was engaging from the very beginning and the main character is very likable. I also like how the story doesn't shy away from getting brutal and cruel. And the artwork is wonderful! I'm really excited to continue on with the next one!

Well, to put it simply, I was expecting a lot less blood. Hmm. I'm going to read Saints because the art is good.

I really liked this book. Read it before Saints and I am very glad I did so. I didn't know enough about the Boxer rebellion and I appreciated this perspective which pushed me to learn more.

I did a virtual video book talk on this for the Alaska Library Association conference:

I'm so frustrated by how good [author:Gene Luen Yang|68959] is. [book:American Born Chinese|118944] is a genuine highlight of my life and fucked me up. [book:The Eternal Smile: Three Stories|4437831] fucked me up. So it's no suprise what both [book:Boxers|17210470] and [book:Saints|17210471] FUCKED ME UP.

This two books have solidified what I kind of already knew: Yang is probably one of my favorite graphic novelists, and he makes me want to read more graphic novels. It's just such an incredibly unique way to tell a story!

Anywho, Boxers was the lengthier of the two books, and I would say I liked it better. It was heartbreaking and violent, but also had that occasionally whimsical humor that I've seen from Yang. Love the way he adds spirits and such to a history, it's just so clever.

I got pretty emotional after reading these two. Seeing the same bloodshed from opposite sides kind of just made it clear how much war and murder sucks for everyone involved! Putting actual faces to both sides made everything so much sadder.

Also, the ending of Saints kind of blew me away.

The illustrations were freakishly good. I'm beyond impressed.

The whole thing was freakishly good, and it's definitely onesitting.com with Yang's books.

I've never been more sure of anything that I am of this: I've got to read more of what Yang has written.

This is the second graphic novel I have added to my library thanks to Michael Kindness of Books on the Nightstand fame. The illustrations were amazing and the story quite interesting. I am very much looking forward to reading the second book in the series, Saints. I also will be checking out the further reading recommendations since I know little of The Boxer Rebellion.
