wow, this is a tough book chock full of history, violent scenes and beautiful illustrations. i loved the chinese opera depictions. more than anything, this graphic novel captures the senselessness of war and its ability to escalate quickly.

This book was soooooo good. I loved the storytelling and the art style. I loved all the characters in the book. I can't wait to read the next one.

I'm going to write a review of both volumes when I'm done reading Saints (which should be sometime tomorrow). This blew me away though...much more impressive than I expected.

I read this after Saints, because my library initially only owned the aforementioned book. They finally got around to adding Boxers, and I am quite glad they did -- but I do wish I'd read the two together. The books are impressive on their own, but they complement each other so perfectly (and heartbreakingly) that I now can't imagine recommending one over the other. I don't know a lot about Chinese history or the Boxer Rebellion, and while I'm sure Yang takes some creative liberties in his story, it's a fascinating subject approached in a very human way.

Excellent graphic novel that weaves the history of the Boxer Rebellion into an entertaining story. I am glad our library had the companion novel, Saints, so I can read it told from the 'other side'.

Eh...

Like I said in my review of Saints, tragic and powerful. You really feel the depth of history coming through providing a really great introductory look at the Boxer revolution in China. Wish it were bound with the companion book Saints.

What makes this book interesting is the history of China and the faith of two very different religions being featured in one story.

I've come to appreciate the work of this author not only for the artwork in these graphic novels, but also for the facts that are used, and the legends that are featured.

The Chinese history is very interesting. The ideals of the religion are incredible and very supportive of the people of the time.
