i ate this book up, the spicy bits added a lot for me.

i like how they tied queerness to mental illness, not once but twice. as recognized back in that time. i wasn’t expecting it at all.

very good read with wonderful pace.

there is a scene in which a character eating out someone's menstrual blood and another scene in which a dog has her throat somewhat bruised and her paws bloody by being restrained from entering a room, the dog lives. There is also graphic depictions of a child's corpse and said child's death, which happens prior to the events of the story, is a recurring element

This is, in fact, a very unconventional story. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, I was thrown for a loop.

I hate every single one of these people: they are horrible to each other and they do terrible things. But I really liked the plot - full of details and little things that made me want to keep reading and for a (somehow) "happy" ending. I particularly enjoyed the dynamics between the twin sisters: despite everything they really love each other.

I really want to read other books by this author.

I wanted to absolutely love this book. Unfortunately it just didn’t click with me. It was often very slow moving and I found myself questioning where the story could go. I could not stand Lucy or Sarah. Lucy is obsessed with her sister to an extremely disturbing level and I found myself just questioning everything. This was set in 1887 Netherlands but was written in today’s modern language and it felt a bit disjointed. 

This is just my opinion and I still recommend giving this a read if it sounds like your cup of tea.

About as female gothic as you can get.

Also a much better take on lesbian vampires that also managed to include Doppelgänger and possession.

I liked the setting of dreary, rural netherlands. The plot is mostly there to scrutinize the sister relationship which was really interesting. The characters' behaviour didn't always make sense to me though (not in a "this is not what I would have done" way, which is also true but I didn't mind, more in a "this is not what people do when they are put in that situation" way) and some of the conflicts of monologues about issues felt a bit forced and not fitting the situation they happened in.
