Read this after I finished Song of Solomon, so that's going to affect my rating of this. Hm. It's not a bad book, I just enjoyed her other book better. But! We're talking about this book, not that one.  I enjoyed Frank and Cee's relationship, I'm a sucker for good sibling dynamics. Of course, the prose is beautiful, though, it's less flowery than Solomon. There were parts where Morrison would describe the death of Frank's friends and it would disturb me--disturbed me more than what McCarthy wrote in Blood Meridian (yeah i said it). I think I wanted more from this book. I understand that Morrison stopped writing this book for a bit (according to Wikipedia) due to a tragedy in her life, so maybe that affected the length of this book, but, who knows. I think this would be a good introductory book for readers interested in getting into Toni Morrison's books.

I liked the switching narratives i just wish it had continued to the end of the book, i liked the mix of less emotional third person narratives and more emotional first person sections

Very fast read. Would've been faster if I didn't have finals rn. Wonderful writing as always. I just couldn't resonate with this one.
I know the takeaway isn't "War is so bad it can briefly turn you into a pedophile" but that's all I keep thinking. :/
If not for that my rating may have been a little higher.

Side note unrelated to my review mostly just related to my observing of Toni Morrison's books, so many of her female characters are ambivalent or numb towards sex. I wonder why that is.

Toni Morrison has a way of making you feel like you’re in the middle of a scene. I enjoyed her narration. This was a hard story but it left me hopeful. I’m glad they found each other again and were able to heal.

This book is impeccably written. I found it to be a harrowing story about the realities of generational trauma due to slavery/racism, as well a portraying the symptoms of PTSD in a seamless and impactful way to help dissolve some of the stigma around this diagnosis. While I found this book to be very much worth the read, I rated it three stars because my star system is based of how much I enjoyed a book, this one left me somber and was not a comfort read.
