I’m stuck. The story from the heist on was five stars. The beginning was too slow and felt like it was trying too hard to be Six of Crows. The characters at first felt like their only personality trait was their trauma (other than Jin, I love Jin). So I think 3.5⭐️? Maybe 3? I can’t decide.

But OMG the bonus epilogue? I did not expect that to hit me as hard as it did. If I could get a whole book from that POV I think I’d cry.

I may regret this in the morning, but ah hell, I give it 5 stars. The first half of the book is S L O W, I know, but it is setting up for a series and I respect that. The second half got a lot more interesting. And for any reader who hasn’t started it yet, I have a tip: READ it. Don’t listen. I alternated between audiobook and the physical book and I got so much more understanding, emotion, and humor from reading the words myself, rather than listening to them.

Holy wow. That was fantastic. A thrilling and captivating novel. With characters well fleshed out and amazing pacing. We have vampires done in a fresh way and a sort of King Arthur remix with a classic heist setting and a lovely found family that I believe will only develop more.

I thought the world building in book 1 would be lacking but I was so pleasantly surprised. It’s rich and well written. It was excellent with just enough that it didn’t feel info dumping and way too dense. There are surprises and reveals through the book and some of them were honestly so well done that I had to put the book down after a very loud “huhhhhh”. The ending honestly had me gobsmacked and I’m reeling. I need book 2!

Arthie definitely gives me Kaz vibes but I think I liked her character waaay more. She’s badass and knows her limits too. She wants revenge against those that colonised her country and made her flee. She has that rage built up in her. I admired her a lot in the book. She gave that “no time for nonsense” type of vibe.

She has a brother which is not by blood but all intents and purposes they are family. Jin was great but out of the them both Arthie is my girl. Their relationship was beautiful. There are other characters too which I did enjoy. There was some serious tension between Arthie and her love interest. I liked how she still stood her ground and didn’t loose all sense when with him.

But all in all, I had a wonderful time reading this. I highly recommend. Especially to those who maybe didn’t enjoy WHTF like they thought they would. The authors writing in this is her best work yet. There is so much to sink our teeth into. The pacing was one of my favourite things about it. 5 stars. Will be patiently waiting for book 2.

I should have looked into this book more because I a, not into vampire stories.
My fault here.
But the writing is so good.
