2.5*s. Not my favorite in this series, and not as rereadable as the others. The stifling rules imposed onto the heroine's life are very viscerally conveyed. And while the story did try to present us with a happy ending, I found it not sufficient to compensate for the suffocating beginning. It's still a successful chapter in the series, but a little less light than I would have liked to be.

Amanda Bartlett is a widowed countess at the age of 32 and mother to two children. She’s spent her whole life doing exactly what was expected of her, and it’s just as boring as one would expect. Her entire life has been dictated by her mother, then her husband, and then her mother again. While buying a book for her son she is bumped into by a stranger on the streets wherein she leaves with the wrong book. Unbeknownst to her, the book she has in her possession is vital to the Crown and Langley Stanhope is tasked with its retrieval.

This is my second book by Susanna Craig (my first being “Who’s that Earl” which is the previous book in the Love and Let Spy series) and beyond just LOVING the word play in the book titles, I really did enjoy this book. The whole spy plot line gives it another layer that sets this book apart from other historical romance novels.

Overall, I would have loved to have seen more resolution with her mother since she really annoyed me for a large part of the book, but I loved that Amanda was able to finally get the adventure and excitement she deserved and wanted. Langley/the Magpie was a great love interest for Amanda and I loved their dynamic and the way they treated each other right from the beginning. A fun read with enough excitement that it kept me up til 2AM to finish lol

* I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books!

This book had so much potential. Some elements were too vague. This book
Does a better job with the mystery/spy elements but the characters were slightly underdeveloped.
After reading 2 books in the series, I believe it might not be for me.

I love both MC, individually and together. I especially like how they draw each other out of their respective shells and make each other grow. The spy plot was fun and a good background to the love story.

You know, the plot of this one wasn't too bad even if the spicy parts were awkward and unrealistic. General Scott's matchmaking strikes again and the adventure and twists in this one don't feel as clunky as the previous book. I think I'll keep on reading the series.

Amanda Bartlett is the widowed Countess of Kingston. She married at nineteen and gave the Earl two sons before he passed away. The three years since his death, she has lead a simple and quiet life. It is beginning to feel tedious. When a mysterious book lands in her possession the last thing she expected was to meet the fascinating man trying to find it.

Major Langley Stanhope, as known as the Magpie, is searching for the book that has fallen into Amanda's hands. With the book in her possession, it puts her family in danger and he also has to figure out who the traitor is. Langley doesn't think the life he leads would be suitable for the delicate lady but he underestimates her daring and the desire they both share for one another.

This one is so good. I liked both of these characters and the tension was good too. It had me turning pages waiting for them to finally give in.
