There was not of points or parts of the book that I found enjoyable. The depiction on Black and Queer folks was disheartening and unforgivable. There were clear choices the author made that I did agree too. I doubt Sookie will be redeemable in future books but I will see. I’m curious if the author has grown since writing this series.

I thought about giving this three stars but then I was thinking about how funny Eric was in this book (especially his orgy outfit) and I decided to go with four stars...
Reading for Fictional Hangover Vampire Book Club.
It’s decent enough if you just want a little mystery, a lot of sex and mindless fun. Will continue series.

This is the 2nd book in the series. It's a great book that expands more into the Sookie world and shows more about the vampires.
I wanted very much to like this series, but after slogging through two books, I have decided that I cannot read the remaining books. This is not because the story line is particularly bad, because that is quite untrue. I found the premise and the locations in this book to be quite charming and worth the read. It's not because all of the characters are one-dimensional (even though a few are and I'll get to that in a minute).
No, I just couldn't keep reading this book series because the 'smut' scenes are still so poorly written as to have it be physically painful for me to read through them. They still come across as though they are written by an inexperienced 14 year old or some wistful old cat lady who has never known love. They are just godawful and honestly, if that's the best this author can write sex scenes, then she should just give up. The only smut worth reading is good smut and this isn't it.
Not only that, but Sookie's character just aggravates the crap out of me. There is so much Mary Sue going on that it isn't even funny, not to mention the conceit of the character is just annoying. Every guy in town wants to fuck her and she knows this (because she's psychic!), but oh.. she only wants to be with vampire lover boy who is so completely one dimensional as to be a trope. Seriously? I feel like he and Edward from Twilight are brothers! Same creepy mannerisms.. same allusions to how awesome they are in bed.. same kinda creepy stalker vibes.. the only difference is that Sookie is an adult whereas Bella was still a teenager. But all the cliches and creepy crappies are still there.
Sadly, the only reason I continued to read this book was because I found the SECONDARY characters fascinating. Honestly, the author should just scrap the main characters (kill Sookie!)and just write stories about some of the secondary characters (like Callisto, Eric, Sam and Luna).
In the end, what I got was a poorly written vampire romance novel veiled very thinly as a mystery novel complete with a main character who is so one dimensional that I might as well walk through her for all the good it would do me to see her as an actual person. Ugh.
