The general format of the story reminded me greatly of Alice in Wonderland - but if Alice was whisked away by a dead man's horse, instead of lured by a rabbit.

The story felt dense, and the fantastical elements took themselves very seriously - the world building was impressive, and I can genuinely understand why this is the beginning of a fairly long running series. I was really pleased with the pacing, with a large resolve halfway through, the main conflict resolving around 85%, and various points of conflict and character growth throughout. The story also didn't hold punches - fair warning that if you do not like character deaths, do not pick up this book. They drop like flies.

This is an old school fantasy heroes journey of a teenage girl that tries to takr up the mantel of Green Rider to deliver an important message to the king. I didnt really care for a lot of the story but it felt easy and cosy to me so I will continue the series and hope for more developped world building and character development as well.

I read to the point where the main character completes the task which had been her only goal since a few pages in ... and then I realized I was only about halfway through the book and that I had no desire to continue with it.

This is the author's first novel, and it reads like one. It's a fine story of a young woman who is given a dangerous responsibility and does her best to see it through, but she doesn't grow during her journey - she begins and ends it as a resourceful and resilient lass who makes it through each encounter by sheer grit and the help of a few allies. And each encounter is self-contained; too early in her quest she meets goodnatured magical friends who dote on her and give her rest and then they leave the narrative, she runs into a villain who's made out to be her nemesis but then he disappears from the narrative also, she meets a friendly lumberjack but then he also departs, and so on and so forth. Too many potentially interesting characters who aren't able to develop more than one dimension. And for a story which is centered on finding a way to get to where the king is, the details of where she is and what lies between her and the end of her route are too vague (we don't ever see her have to make a choice between different roads with different challenges).

Maybe the next half of the book is the reward for having gotten through the first half, but I'm good.

Apparently I have a much higher tolerance for high fantasy if I'm listening to an audiobook, because I was never able to get into this book until I tried the audio. It's the favorite book of a good friend of mine, though, so I was determined. Great world-building, intriguing plot, good action sequences, interesting characters, and fun! 4 stars for now, but I might bump it up later as the book sits with me for longer.

I think this is the 5th time I’ve read Green Rider, and I still love it! I’ll admit, the writing isn’t as incredible as I remembered, but the story absolutely holds up.

This book was recommended by a friend... and an amazing discovery! I love the heroin, the subtle magic that becomes more and more important, all the important political aspects. And the riders!! as a horse rider myself, I loved so much to see this deep connection between horses and humans in the book! Really great!

Epic. Entertaining. Very satisfying.

It's been a while since I've read fantasy. My recent attempts were with books like Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings, which didn't I just couldn't connect to--to the point that I thought that I'd moved on from the fantasy genre and left it behind as a relic of my childhood. Green Rider by Kirsten Britain was written for adults, but possesses the qualities of the fantasy books I loved as a child, and as I read Green Rider I reminisced on works by Tamora Pierce and Gail Carlson Levine.

Great book, good adventures. Some issues with pacing, and I felt as though I was missing parts of the story that came before Karigan's adventure, but the world building and resolution to the story was so well done that I almost didn't mind the minor gaps that were present, or the conflict/resolution/retelling of what had happened to character x/conflict/resolution/retelling pattern that was fairly obvious in the structure of the book.

It was nice to immerse myself in the genre again, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
