I've been trying to track down a copy of this for a while, it's been surprisingly hard, but I caved and purchased a cheap used copy online.

This one has been on my to-read list for a while, I see it recommended again and again for traditonal high fantasy with romance. It was alright...maybe my expectations have been too high for too long. But I kept returning back to it, even if it took me a while to finish. Not much romance but hints of a love triangle forming. A little hamfisted in its set up. I assume it's a slow burn over the next six or seven books.

The action and plot don't pick up until the last third of the book, which moves it along quickly. It's missing something but I can't figure out what. I didn't feel particularly connected to most of the characters. But it does have the vibe of the writing of an older traditional high fantasy, which I'm searching for. Reminded me of Dragonriders of Pern but with horses.

So, mixed feelings! I'm curious to read the next books but I'm not excited enough to purchase them immediately.

First of a series of books, so this is a good starting point. The FMC is strong and competent, and the world-building is interesting and well done.

I love that, unlike the “magic is dying” trope that I find old and dull, this story picks up as a forgotten magic is re-discovered and its use increases.

Good, classic Fantasy writing.

Great book with a good set up and plot. Does a good job of setting up a world and the characters. Personally I did not really enjoy some of the books later on in this series and found them to have dragged on a bit.

This is the book that got me into reading as a child, so that is a very biased five stars lolol.

A bit dense at times, but understandable since there is quite a lot is world building to set up. I enjoyed periodically having other pov’s though the shadow man’s felt much more disjointed at the start since we didn’t know anything about what was happening
