Nice plot twist. Didn’t expect anything. I wanted to give it a 5 star, but for some reason I can’t. It’s not lacking in any area that I can communicate… it just feels empty towards the end.

This book started out as a read that I didn’t fully enjoy but as I pushed through, especially to part two, it turned into a great thriller and mystery. The main character is so determined and planned out, it made for a very enjoyable read!

this has one of the better portayals of
domestic abuse
in the thriller genre. some parts are more exaggerated than is typical, but I was impressed by the nuances
”he liked to keep her safe, but also to keep her afraid so she’d rely on him” realization and the not-obvious lovebombing and gaslighting
. the fact that it was pretty grounded in reality made me that much more affected and invested in the story. (although there is an unsuccessful attempt to humanize this character that feels out of place since they’re villainized the entire book & undeserving.)

I guessed a big twist from the beginning, but I still think it was a great one—I’m just very skeptical and thriller-brained. plus this book doesn’t depend on its twists, its plot stands on its own.

The twists in the book weren't exactly unpredictable... there were a couple I didnt see coming. The plot was interesting, the way it intertwined, but I felt like the story could have focused more on fleshing out the side characters than what type of wines they drank.

disclaimer: I don’t really give starred reviews. I hope my reviews provide enough information to let you know if a book is for you or not. Find me here: https://linktr.ee/bookishmillennial

This is a very suspenseful thriller and the first part of the book is narrated by two separate narrators, one is the new fiance of Richard, a pretty wealthy man who is also a bit mysterious and takes really good care of her. The other perspective is from Vanessa, who is Richard's ex wife and their split was clearly very messy and not amicable.

I have to say, I am usually one of those really annoying people who always says "Yeah I saw that coming" but I really did not see the first twist coming at all. Even with the description on the book, it says something like:
  • You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife.
  • You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
  • You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
  • Assume nothing.
Even with that, I guess I was extra vigilant and trying to figure out how the writers were trying to trick us and I still was very surprised.

I think if there's one thing I can learn from books like these, which include a haunted past trauma, is that I need to face my past head on and grow from it because clearly, in many of the books I read, that is not the case and those mistakes or pains seem to always be lurking around these characters.

I would say that the ending was a bit bizarre for me - I didn't love the lack of clarity and I was a bit frustrated with the character and maybe even with the authors for allowing such grace and forgiveness for a character that I felt didn't earn it at all.

However, I couldn't put it down, read it in two hours and for the most part, I enjoyed it!

CW: There is abuse in this - not just from human to human, but substance abuse as well.

I’ve had this book sitting on my bookshelf for more than a year now and finally after all this time I decided to pick it up and read it. Part One of the book was pretty easy to guess what was going on. Part Two I was confused. And Part Three put everything into perspective and when I say everything I mean everything. Overall it was an okay book not as great as the anonymous girl but still good nonetheless.
