It starts out promising but then falls apart in the last third. The emotional conflict was a lot more compelling before a major twist. The reveal that Livia’s parents were not, in fact, the ones who tortured Erik and that actually they tried to save his life makes his entire motivation in the first third of the book make no damn sense. It really ruined the whole book for me.

The world was cool, and I really liked the siren pirate lady. However, the fumbling of the ending means I won’t be continuing this series

“She was never theirs anyway. Not really. From the moment the songbird tried to appeal to a serpent, she was mine.”

Ahh love this possessive pirate so much. Fun, readable romantasy with all the tropes done right! True enemies to lovers with dual pov, masked man, touch her and die, who did this to you?, I can fix him, kill for her,
bonded pair w/telepathy, bow to your queen

This was very mid. If you’ve read any enemies-to-lovers/fated mates fantasies, you’ve read this one. It wasn’t bad, just very basic. I won’t be continuing the series.

After reading reviews of this book, I was pleasantly surprised that unlike what a lot of people had said, the romance was PERFECT! Enemies to lovers and they are enemies until the last 20% of the book and then truly have such a beautiful love between them! Some reviews also mentioned that they found the FMC naive? And sure, she’s lived a life where she’s been loved and protected unlike our MMC but I didn’t think she did anything annoyingly naive AT ALL. In fact, she was very intelligent and although there were maybe one or two times I got a little annoyed at her, that’s probably a “me” thing because I truly hate when FMCs have a revelation on the MMC to where they finally understand them better and you think she’s making progress and then in the next chapter she all of a sudden still hates the MMC and acts as though she never had the revelation about him and reverts back to repeating the same thoughts she’s always had about him. I can’t stand it, but luckily it didn’t last long enough to irritate me into DNF’ing the book lol another thing the reviews had me expecting was a huge plot twist, and maybe that’s why I wasn’t very surprised? But I didn’t think it was a massive mind fuck plot twist like I thought it was going to be 😂 I think this is a great book and I loved it!

I feel quite torn about this book.
I was in the mood for something romance-heavier, and simply happened to see some artwork for this book on Threads. The synopsis sounded intriguing enough, so I immediately started the book (because it was on Kindle Unlimited).
I was actually quite surprised about how much I liked the pirate/ seafaring aspect. I haven‘t read many books like this, and I didn‘t think that I‘d enjoy it, but it ended up being on of my favorite parts, to be honest.
Unfortunately, the romance (the thing I picked this book up for) fell flat for me. At first, It was very intriguing that the male main character was kinda unapologetically evil, but soon he started to blend together with every single “misunderstood dark, morally grey, cocky“ fantasy-romance love interest. He didn‘t manage to stand out at all.
The female main character also felt a little bland to me.
I did like some of the side characters, but none of them felt entirely fleshed out.
The attraction between the two main characters didn‘t feel very believable, so I got bored by it quite quickly.
Aside from the setting - which I already mentioned - I also found the magic to be quite interesting. I would‘ve honestly liked to see more time being dedicated to the unique aspects of the world and its magic, instead of the romance.
Unfortunately, the execution of this book‘s fairly interesting concepts ended up falling flat for me.

Overall, this book was fine. It was enjoyable enough, and it also succeeded in making me want to read more pirate books. Other than that, I don‘t have much to say about it.

Sigh.
This had so much hope. I enjoyed the read overall, and the world was interesting with engaging descriptions, but somehow I still found the world building and magic hard to follow.
A flat FMC who we know next to nothing about still, and
who didn’t actually seem to care for long about being captured even though she apparently had a wonderful family and friends. Even when she was upset she could barely get through one cross thought without commenting on how hot Erik is.

Some of the ways plot points were revealed and dealt with were very confusing and clumsy. E.g.
Narza’s confession to Livia about the mantle…..

Decent cliff hanger ending though I think we all know where it is headed.
Guess I’m reading the Ever Queen now. Why do I do this to myself?!
