This book is so so good. It's like Sherman Alexie meets Rainbow Rowell meets Junot Diaz meets The Vigilante Poets of Selwyn Academy (sorry, don't remember the author's name but it's good too, so go read it).
Gabi is the girl I needed in high school. This is the book I wish I'd had when I was 16, or 20 even.
I think this is my favorite read in a while. I want a copy of my own. I keep hugging my library book.

Pretty terrific, this one. The story of Gabi's senior year, as told in her journal. The voice is so spot-on and true and it deals with lots of issues, but in a very real, honest way. And, in terms of format, these read like *actual* diary entries, as opposed to what happens in a lot of so-called diary books.
And honestly, Gabi is just the best. There's so much here and it's done so well and it's great and if, perchance, someone gave it all the awards, I'd be pretty cool with that.

Not for me. Trying to do too much (teen pregnancy, fatshaming, coming out, ableism) and I am feeling overwhelmed.
SO GREAT, oh my gosh. I know I'm a little late to the game here (at least in terms of the librarysphere), so I'm really just joining a chorus of people raving about it. But it's so good! So funny and realistic and dealing with a lot of issues in an organic way. I especially loved Gabi's zine <3
Gabi A Girl in Pieces
4.5/5 stars
The best way that I can describe this book is a better version of The House on Mango Street. Some may disagree, but I could not connect with that book, but this book, I related to and connected with so much, it was ridiculous. Gabi was a wonderful character, and I really loved seeing the characters around her through her own eyes. Being a plus-sized Latina girl whose family mirrors Gabi’s a lot, I saw myself here. I loved the poetry element and felt this had a strong vibe of the book What My Mother Doesn’t Know (which is one of my favorite books).
So many horrible things happen to our main character in her life, which I felt made it realistic. This book was just lovely and had powerful commentary on so many vital issues. Trigger warnings for basically everything though. I think the only reason that this didn’t get the full five stars is that it was bleak and if I’m not too happy reading it then it won’t rate as high for me. Also, I loved having fat rep, but I felt like every other sentence was “but I’m the FAT girl” “being the fat girl…” and I just wished it wasn’t too constantly ingrained.
But overall I would definitely recommend this and I feel one of those rare instances where I see myself in a book.
