4.02 AVERAGE

For the amount of issues tackled, this book does not seem heavy handed or confused or anything. This was an extremely well done coming of age book

Ojos abiertos, piernas cerradas./Eyes open, legs closed.

This was the extent of my sex ed at home, & I know that other Latinas can relate. Hay que ~darse a respetar,~ lest you become una mujer fácil. But this only applies to you if you’re a girl cuz boys can’t help themselves. 🤷🏻‍♀️
[cw: drug addiction, r-word, death of a parent, abortion, rape, fat & homophobic slurs]

Gabi, A Girl in Pieces deals with the pressures put on many girls to be pure & thin. Gabi’s a fat Chicana high school senior who deals with life by writing in her compulsively readable diary. She’s believable (but kinda immature for an 18-y/o) protagonist.

✍🏼I wish I’d read this book as a teen. It captures what it’s like to be figuring life out, especially if u & your friends are dealing with heavy situations and unsure of how to cope. Gabi channels her frustrations into art & writing captures her insecurities & growth as a person in a beautiful way.

😭I especially liked the mother/daughter dynamics here. Like Gabi & her mom, my mom and I had “a light switch relationship... Sometimes she’s wonderful. Sometimes not so much.” I love this comparison. Like in other Latinx YA, the MC & her mom butt heads frequently. Gabi reflects on her mom’s hypocrisy throughout the book (eg, Gabi is expected to practice abstinence while her brother is encouraged to use condoms.) Both her mom & tía Bertha berate Gabi about her weight & accuse her of wanting to be a gabachilla (nosotros los boricuas diríamos ~gringuita~) because she likes to write & wants to go away for college. It’s a realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be raised by imperfect people who want what’s best for you but don’t always know how to be supportive. If I’d have read this as a teen I would have def felt less alone!

😬I can be a very fickle reader with Latinx lit. IDK if it’s because I subconsciously have high expectations for it or because it bring up lots of feelings & memories that I want to forget. Whatever it is, I almost DNFed this one 30 pages in, convinced that I *hated* it, only to pick it back up 3 mos later. Now it’s one of my favorites. Here’s to second chances & surprise faves. *salud*

Authentic, interesting voice though somewhat expected plot.

Most authentic YA voice I've read in a while, with refreshing diversity that doesn't feel tacky.

2md read, loved it again

Looooooved this YA read! The narrator/protagonist has such an authentic teenage voice. The story unfolds via Gabi's journal. She endures the emotional rollercoaster that is being a teenager with humor and grace. The book tackles a lot of topics and issues that teenagers face — sex, abortion, teen pregnancy, drugs/alcohol, family issues, race, body image, etc. —and does it so well. Yet again, excited to share this one with my students.

"Gabi, a Girl in Pieces" is told through Gabi's journal entries as she documents her last year of high school. Gabi was a likeable character from the start and I went into this story wanting the best for her. Throughout each obstacle and challenge, we watch Gabi learn a bit more about herself and about those who are in her life for friends and family. This story touches on some real and hard truths/life lessons. I rooted for Gabi the whole way through!

TW for book: r*pe, physical abuse, abortion, drug use

Holy shit, this book. It starts off kind of slow and took me awhile to really get into but it was so absolutely worth it. I wish so much that I had been able to read this book in high school. Reading this book is like witnessing someone else's journey into feminism real time. Gabi is such an unbelievably relatable character, constantly worrying about being fat, being smart enough for college, how she seems to boys, to her mom, to her friends. I loved every single character and connected with all of her friends and family. I loved every second of it. Go read it!

One of my more recent reads. Love Martin he's perfect. Gabi's love of food is perfectly hilarious. Only thing was that not all the Spanish was translated and I got lost. Overall above average but, not enough to get anymore stars.

The audio is amazing.
