Cool concept of falling in love whole trying to kill each other but the plot was fairly basic for the most part and the ending had too many plot twists at once to leave value shockwise

So I got this book because I read the sample and loved this one specific element of the worldbuilding; namely there's a system where each day of the week is associated with a deity and an element and as a small child you get the patron element of the day you were born tattooed on your hand. It has something of an effect on your personality and maybe the magic you can do. It's just incredibly cool and it's not just there for window dressing. It pops up again and again in various ways. This is a small element of a lot of incredible worldbuilding, but it's one of those details in fantasy or speculative fiction that just invites you in if you're a reader like me. It makes you think about what you might have been born under. I was born on a tuesday and I believe that that's the equivalent of the day in here associated with the wind.

And just like that I was hooked.

This book is so much more than careful, compelling worldbuilding though. It's full of wonderful, achingly human characters. Various facets of both main characters resonated deeply with me and I wanted both of them to win but also wanted them to lose because winning was so self-evidently awful for them and would probably deepen their trauma.

There's many parallels in here to real world things ... but there's also so much wonder and fun in here too. I am so glad I spent time on this.

It was a great story. The world building was good, the characters were flawed and that made them perfect because it was so easy to empathize with them. The plot was good too, I saw the plot twist coming but it was still very shocking to read it.
Even though I enjoyed this book, I'm not sure if I want to read the sequel. I'm intrigued enough to want to know what's going to happen next, but at the same time I'm not that invested in the story to want to read the next book. Maybe in the future, when I'm more in the mood for this story, I'll finish it.

Rich and beautiful story, I really liked it
