I am so glad to have read this book post-high school; I am not sure I would have been able to appreciate it as much as a teenager.
In an insane asylum, the men are broken, castrated, and hollow. They are slaves of a machine - a clockwork process of monotony day in and day out, controlled by the Big Nurse - her staff and the inmates equally afraid of her. All those committed have convinced themselves that the Big Nurse does everything in their best interest and lose every sense of independence and confidence.
One day, a new person is committed to the ward; one full of life and defiance, of sly tricks and clever stories. He does not seem to belong in the least - both because of his mental capacity and his thirst for life. This, of course, throws a rock into a very calm lake. The repercussions start slowly at first, but continue to build.
Highly recommended, even though everyone has probably already read it...haha

I'd read about 3/4 of the book when I decided to start reading another one. After I finished the other book, I had no desire to pick this one up again. Don't get me wrong: the story is very fascinating! I just felt like it progressed way too slowly for my liking.
ken kesey was a type of mad I cant believe he was ever lucid enough to write this. I love a good mental hospital novel so this had understandably been calling to me and I'm glad I picked it up. good themes about power dynamics, gender, and freedom
