I wish I would have read this sooner. I loved the movie, and the book is just perfect as well. Even if you've seen it, do yourself a favor, read it. It's great.

a very good reflection of a specific location and time that can feel outdated, though i also think the ways that race and gender were addressed in this book inform some of the themes like control and autonomy under the book’s setting

So if you look past the blatant racism and sexism, I actually really enjoyed the meat of this story. I had a hard time seeing Ratched as full on EVIL, but she sure wasn't a good person. She maybe started her career with good intentions, but dang, it is time to retire.

McMurphy was pretty great, and as much as I wanted plan A to work out with an early morning escape, plan B was what I expected and an absolutely fitting solution. I haven't seen (and probably never will) the movie, but Jack Nicholson is clearly perfect for that role.

The hardest part to read was a single paragraph. It was about the one patient who had worked for the railroad, and how he had to work so hard to use the stop watch properly. It just shattered my heart because that is so many people I have worked with in the SpEd world, not to mention my younger brother. He works so hard to mop the floor at his job, and anyone else could do it in 5 minutes... Hang on, let me duct tape my heart together again.
