This was sooooo slow to start. I found myself leaving it and picking up other things to read instead but it was a bookclub pick so I did end up finishing it and it picks up after the second half. I do now see how the author could have done that intentionally and how that all relates back to the mental state of the characters but my god that was a slog initially.

I read this during my own personal flight through the cuckoo's nest... my therapist said maybe I should look for something a little lighter. I said, What it's not bothering me! Really! I finished it and it did bother me a little. Don't tell.

This book made me want to read and write more than any other I've read. It is equally hopeful and tragic, and the prose that Kesey crafts is absolutely astonishing. He can use imagery so masterfully, sometimes using very abstract phrases/images which are incredible. The characters are great and memorable and Kesey is great at writing how people interact in such a realistic way. Ultimately, I will never forget this book, and I know I will read it many more times in my life.

I never saw the (full) movie - but understand the movie follows the book pretty closely.  The book was really really good.
