The only reason this isn't 5 stars is some unchallenged content that can be largely attributed to societal views at time of publication. Everything else is just too good. The language can be hard to understand at times but the themes, imagery used, references to other parts of the text, characters, language (when you take time to understand it) and rlly good execution of a tragedy arc outshine that. I am so in love with this book omg.

The play was written as a poem, and it didn't suit me. I wasn't very impressed with the writing and narration style. Generally, I didn't enjoy the book.

Wow... this was not great. I remember not liking it the first time I read it almost 10 years ago but man this does not hold up. The writing is choppy at best and full of weird innuendos I had a hard time deciphering. I didn't like any of the characters. Juliet was my favorite I guess but that's because what she said made the most sense to me- like in a reading sense. It wasn't a riddle.
I'll stick with the ballet version of R&J.

Notes

Romeo & Juliet was the first book/play that I read that really made me appreciate the beauty of words. Shakespeare tells a powerful and thought-provoking story about the harsh brutality of love. The last line never fails to make me cry: “For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”

Favourite Quotes

“That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet.”

“These violent delights have violent ends and in their triumph die, like fire and powder, which as they kiss consume.”

“Death, that hath sucked the honey of thy breath, hath had no power yet upon thy beauty.”

“Eyes, look your last! Arms take your last embrace! And, lips, O you the doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss.”

Another book I read for school. I enjoyed reading it and some of the work we did made it more fun.
