I read this for the assigned reading, expecting it to be horrifying and horrible, but I must confess that I found the storytelling to be enjoyable (or maybe it was the impressions my class did of Romeo and Juliet when we read it or the fact we just roasted the characters every English lesson). Do I still believe that the "love at first sight" thing is a myth and absolutely absurd? Yes, I MEAN HE WAS IN LOVE WAS ROSALINE JUST TWO SECONDS AGO!! do I still believe it was a little dragged out when they killed themselves for each other? absolutely (very unrealistic but "romantic"), But in the end, I managed to comprehend, And enjoy it, will definitely be checking out more of Shakespeare's works from now on.😉

Other than the romance, timing really takes protagonism in the story, for Romeo and Juliet it is always too early or too late, they are condemned from the moment they meet.

it’s not that i don’t like shakespeare, because i love him. his writing is genius and i appreciate mostly all of it. the only reason i couldn’t stand this was because romeo and juliet are some of the most insufferable characters i have ever read about. i absolutely am in awe of their annoyingness. despite this, the point was made very clear and i really did like the story.

i might reread but probably not ☑️

I read Romeo and Juliet because I wanted to see what all the fuss is about...
I get the "hype" surrounding it, and I imagine it was original and singular in its era... But I barely enjoyed it.

It had some pretty beautiful and lyrical writing in it, and yet so many problematic themes and sentences as well. But as the format I read mentioned, it's not an "unscathed" representation of his work; it has been polished, changed, misrepresented, misunderstood and even experimented with in the theatre.
So I guess, we really cannot know "what the poet was trying to say."

Romeo and Juliet has gone up on my list of Shakespeare plays I adore since I've read it in high school. From it being one of my least favorite plays (due to the version I read being much abridged for high school students, not really going into the nature of the threatened child-adult marriage between Juliet and Paris), to it being one of the most interesting plays I've read next to Death of a Salesman due to it's appearance of being a Shakespearean/Elizabethan comedy -- until the start of Act 3.
